Online BOS

The Book of Shadows is another primary tool used in Wicca, and by many Witches. Not all Witches keep BOS,such as trad Witches. It contains much of the magickal lore, correspondences and spellsused in the Craft. Some treat it as a magickal diary, with recording their experiences. The first well known Book of Shadows was written by Gerald Gardner, although there is still much scandal concerning who actually wrote it, with a lot of finger-pointing toward Aleister Crowley and in some cases Doreen Valiente. The name, “Book of Shadows,” is used to refer to the Witch-Hunt days and the need for secrecy of the religion, and thus an allusion is made to practicing within the shadows. Today, the term Book of Light is sometimes used as the need to hide and stay hidden is no longer necessary.
Often hand written out, the Book of Shadows, or BOS can be typed out or kept on a floppy disk as well. The best idea I’ve come across for keeping a Book of Shadows is a three-ring binder so pages can be more easily shuffled around, added and organized. If you choose to write your BOS in a magickal language like the runes, make sure that you can read it. It won’t do to have all your writing in a language that you can’t read at a quick glance or need to know. In the end, the BOS is a personal tool and becomes personalized by the individual who uses it. Nor is the BOS holy writing, but a guide line and source containing much of a Coven’s or Solitary’s magickal lore and traditions.
As far as the Book of Shadows is concerned, it may well have been inspired by the grimores said to be kept by Magus’ and Sorcerers throughout the Medieval Ages. The most famous being The Key of Solomon. Gerald Gardner is supposedly to have received the Book of Shadows during his initiation in 1939. He later published it in his novel, “High Magic’s Aid.” This Book of Shadows was then expanded on by Doreen Valiente and Aleister Crowley. Many Hereditary Witches claim that a similar book is kept, though it is not refer to as a Book of Shadows. Kerr Cuhulain has pointed out in his “Wiccan Warrior”, that Gardner did indeed draw on Charles G. Leland’s book “Aradia: Gospel of the Witches” published in 1899 as well as several other sources when writing his Book of Shadows.
The term grimoire, or grammar, means essentially a book of learning and the name seems to make sense as a universal term for this type of book. The name “grimoire” is not the actual name which is used within any tradition. This name is used solely because the real name of the book is secret, and so it serves as a point of reference for the same item between traditions. The things which are written within the book are religious rituals, amendments to those rituals, and other things which have to do with the religion. Things related to magick are written in a different book. It does not serve as a diary. Most of the time, this book is hand written by the individual. In some families, this book is copied from what is referred to as a “Great Book.”
Whether called a Book of Shadows, Book of Light, Mirror Book, Grimore, Great Book, ect. It is a personal tool and highly individualized by it’s user and coven.
This is the basic outline that most Books of Shadows have:
* Title Page (This usually says: Book of Shadows, sometimes mentions what tradition and often has your name listed on it)
* Laws (This is the rules, codes and ethics)
* Invocations of the Goddess and God (This is often a blessing for the book, usually appearing before or next to the Laws)
* An alter diagram
* Circle Casting and dispersing instructions
* Rituals (Sabbats, Full Moon rite, tool consecrations)
* Prayers, chants, invocations, spells
* Initiation Ritual (Whether self or Coven)
* Pictures, Sketches

Listen to the words of the Dark Mother, who of old was called Hecate, Nuit, Morrigan, Banba, Erda, Macha, MotherNight, Sekhmet, and many other names:
Whenever you seek wisdom, at the time of the Darkening Moon, come together in love and trust and learn of Me, who am the Wisest of Crones...Ye who search the mysteries of the Earth, the secrets of Air and Darkness, of Blood and Fire, the silence of the uttermost stars, come unto me, and I shall whisper to you in the depths of midnight.

Ye shall approach Me in silence, and as a sign that ye are free from fear, your breast you shall bare to My blade...for fear has no place in My mysteries, and that which you seek of me will destroy you if you fear it.

For I am the dolmen arch beyond which stretch the mysteries of infinity. I am the silence before birth and after death. I am the clouded mirror in which you scry your own soul. I am mist in the twilight, the vast and starry sky of midnight, shadows on the Moon.
All things come to Me in the end, and yet I am the beginning of all. I meet you at the crossroads, I lead you through the darkness, My hand you grasp in the passage between the worlds. To those that toy with Me am I an instrument of self-destruction. yet to the true seeker do I bring knowledge beyond mortal comprehension.
Of you shall I demand the utter truth of all that you are, and in return shall I give you all that you may be, all that I am. For My wisdom is beyond the Ages, and knowledge of My Secrets is power over self, over fear, over death. Nor do I demand aught of you which you cannot give. For I am the Mother of Mysteries, and as you know Me, so shall you learn to know yourself.

Magickal and healing stones

Before a stone is used in a spell, the stone should be charged with the purpose of the spell. This is done by holding the stone in your projective (right) hand and letting the energy that is within you pour into the stone while visualizing the purpose.
The stones can be cleansed using several methods. Set the stone in direct sunlight, preferable outside, and let the Sun's energies do the work. The stone should stay outside for anywhere from one day to a week, depending on how much other energy the stone's absorbed. The stone should be brought in every evening at dusk.
Check the stone by placing it in your receptive hand (left). Does the stones natural energy vibrations feel normal? Once they do, the cleansing is finished.
The Earth can also be used, although this method is much more time consuming. Take the stones and bury them in the earth. Remember to mark where the stones are buried! Leave them there for a week or two. Check them to see if they are cleansed. If not, rebury them
and wait another week.

In general, crystals and stones used for healing are used in a variety of ways…They are worn on the body as pendents, rings, etc.; carried on the person in pockets, mojo bags, and such; used as healing pendulums suspended above the affected areas; placed directly on the affected body part or placed on the appropriate chakra; and sometimes they are used to create healing tinctures that are taken internally, applied to affected body areas, or sprayed around a space, and that’s what we’re going to look at here.
The following information is taken from: "Crystal Prescriptions" by Judy Hall, and you can find a link to her book in the list of credits at the bottom of this page.

Making a Crystal Remedy

All you need to make a crystal remedy is the appropriate crystal, which has been cleansed and purified, one or two clean glass bowls, spring water and a suitable bottle in which to keep it (colored glass is preferable to clear as it preserves the vibrations better.)

Remedies can be made by the direct or indirect method. Spring water should be used rather than tap water that has chlorine, fluoride and aluminium added to it. Water from a spring with healing properitesis particularly effective.

Direct Method

Place enough spring water in a glass bowl to cover the crystal. Stand the bowl in sunlight for several hours. (If the bowl is left outside, cover with a glass lid or clingwrap to prevent insects falling into it.) If appropriate, the bowl can also be left overnight in moonlight.

Indirect Method

*Some stones, such as Malachite, Sulphur, Galena and Vanadinite, are toxic and remedies from these stones need to be made by an indirect method that transfers the vibrations of the stones without transferring any of the toxic material from which the stone is formed. if in doubt– use the indirect method.

Place the crystal in a small glass bowl and stand the bowl within a large bowl that has sufficient spring water to raise the level above the crystal in the inner bowl. Stand the bowl in sunlight for several hours. (If the bowl is left outside, cover with a glass lid or clingwrap.) If appropriate, the bowl can also be left overnight in moonlight.

Bottling and Preserving

If the remedy is not to be used within a day, top up with two-thirds brandy, vodka or cider vinegar to one-third remedy, otherwise the remedy will become musty. This makes a ‘mother remedy’ that can be further diluted. To make a small dosage bottle, add seven drops of the mother remedy to pure water if using immediately. For prolonged use, vodka makes a useful preservative as it has no smell.

Using a Crystal Remedy

For short-term use, a remedy can be sipped every few minutes or rubbed on the affected part. Hold the water in your mouth for a few moments. If a droper bottle has been made, drop seven drops under your tongue at regular intervals until the symptoms or condition ceases.

Remedies can also be applied to the skin, either at the wrist or over the site of a problem, or added to bath water.

If a spray bottle is made, spray all around the aura or aournd the room. this is particularly effective for clearing negative energies, espeically from a sickroom or an electromagnetically or emotionally stressed place.
